Epilogue: The Wife of Noble Character

¹⁰^[a]A wife of noble character^(A) who can find?^(B)
    She is worth far more than rubies.
¹¹Her husband^(C) has full confidence in her
    and lacks nothing of value.^(D)
¹²She brings him good, not harm,
    all the days of her life.
¹³She selects wool and flax
    and works with eager hands.^(E)
¹⁴She is like the merchant ships,
    bringing her food from afar.
¹⁵She gets up while it is still night;
    she provides food for her family
    and portions for her female servants.
¹⁶She considers a field and buys it;
    out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
¹⁷She sets about her work vigorously;
    her arms are strong for her tasks.
¹⁸She sees that her trading is profitable,
    and her lamp does not go out at night.
¹⁹In her hand she holds the distaff
    and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
²⁰She opens her arms to the poor
    and extends her hands to the needy.^(F)
²¹When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
    for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
²²She makes coverings for her bed;
    she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
²³Her husband is respected at the city gate,
    where he takes his seat among the elders^(G) of the land.
²⁴She makes linen garments and sells them,
    and supplies the merchants with sashes.
²⁵She is clothed with strength and dignity;
    she can laugh at the days to come.
²⁶She speaks with wisdom,
    and faithful instruction is on her tongue.^(H)
²⁷She watches over the affairs of her household
    and does not eat the bread of idleness.
²⁸Her children arise and call her blessed;
    her husband also, and he praises her:
²⁹“Many women do noble things,
    but you surpass them all.”
³⁰Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
    but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
³¹Honor her for all that her hands have done,
    and let her works bring her praise^(I) at the city gate.

²⁶“Fellow children of Abraham^(A) and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation^(B) has been sent. ²⁷The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus,^(C) yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets^(D) that are read every Sabbath. ²⁸Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.^(E) ²⁹When they had carried out all that was written about him,^(F) they took him down from the cross^(G) and laid him in a tomb.^(H) ³⁰But God raised him from the dead,^(I) ³¹and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem.^(J) They are now his witnesses^(K) to our people.

The Empty Tomb^(A)

20 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene^(B) went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance.^(C) ²So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved,^(D) and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”^(E)

¹⁰Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

¹¹Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb^(A) ¹²and saw two angels in white,^(B) seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

¹³They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”^(C)

“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”^(D) ¹⁴At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,^(E) but she did not realize that it was Jesus.^(F)

¹⁵He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?^(G) Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

¹⁶Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic,^(H) “Rabboni!”^(I) (which means “Teacher”).

¹⁷Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers^(J) and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father^(K) and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

¹⁸Mary Magdalene^(L) went to the disciples^(M) with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.
